John Tyler died from wounds on 10th January, 1915, after having been sent to a base hospital on the coast, but as yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded. During December, 1914, the 1st Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division were in the sector facing La Petite Douve Farm in Belgium where heavy rain had turned the trenches into a quagmire. The German lines were 130 yards away and on a small rise so that the water flowed down from there into the British trenches. 1st Cornwall also had to contend with shell fire and snipers which accounted for the casualties. In January 1915 they moved to the Messines front. |
